the young couple’s romance
I am in Canada now, half way around the world from home. I looked at my lock and calculate the time back home. I realize that half a world away; people are busy getting ready for a wedding for my niece. I met her when she was 2 days old. I think back to the first time I met my niece. At that time, my sister cradled her in the arms; my niece clasped her mother’s finger. My feeling tell me that my niece would a sunny girl, a joy to people around her. From the beginning of the young couple’s romance, it was evident that they were suitable and were completely intrigued with each other. Then the couple had an engagement party a few months ago. I can imagine the excitement and emotions of the family today. The time is near. The wedding will begin in 3 short hours. Wearing the wedding dress, the bride will be radiant as she comes down the aisle escorted by her father. She will wear her grandmother’s pearls as an accessory, Her veil will be the same one as her cousin wore last year. As is customary, under her garments she will wear a blue garter. As part of the tradition, she will be wearing something old, something new ,something borrowed and something blue. As the first chords of the wedding march are played, the congregation will rise. Gasps will be heard as they catch a glimpse of the bride in her gorgeous wedding dress. The mother of the bride will calmly view this whole event, though tears will blur her vision. She will be over-come with sentiment at her daughter’s apparent happiness. Josh and I first met in 2000 through my friend (his sister). He was extremely quiet and we hardly spoke. Later in 2003 our relationship grew so much that we started dating on the 21st December. In the next 3 years we became best of friends, we would do anything for each other. He finally built up the courage to ask my dad out for coffee so he could ask his permission to marry me. My dad gladly approved. So on our 3 year anniversary (21 Dec 2006) Josh took me out to dinner on the Gold Coast Gondola. When we arrived we were greeted with 12 stunning red roses, champagne and chocolates, followed by a waiter bringing down my favourite meal (Garlic Prawns on Saffron rice), mud cake and strawberries for desert. As we were gliding through a wonderland of shimmering lights while relaxing and listening to the soft background music and gentle lapping of the water Josh struggled to get a box out of his back pocket. After admiring a small island I turned to him, and to my surprise he was holding out the open box, and inside was a gorgeous (and generous) diamond ring! He followed by saying the four words I was so desperate to hear…”Will…you…marry…me?” Of course I cheerfully accepted, with tears falling down my cheeks. It truly was a magical night to remember!
Planning our wedding was the next thing to do. As I was a full time university student and Josh was a full time apprentice, we did not have a big budget, so we went to the bridal expo held in Brisbane City Hall to gather some ideas. When we were leaving with no luck my sister grabs me from behind and pulls me over to a stand… The University of Queensland stand. I know what you are thinking… ‘a university?’ Well I thought the same thing, however the price was unbeatable, and the location looked amazing. We agreed to meet the events co-ordinator for a look around the site, as soon as we got there we knew this was where we would start our lives as a married couple. We were to have a Queensland University Wedding. After this, everything fell into place. I received a call a few days later from the expo to tell me that I had won an amount of money to put towards a wedding cake from Merivale Cakes and Crafts. I was ecstatic! This enabled us to get a uniquely hand crafted masterpiece of a cake at a fraction of the price. My sister’s business Create Milk made my unforgettable invitations, which left my guests eager to attend what was looking up to be a perfect wedding day.
